Forces of hate and intolerance have discovered a new focus for their anger–construction of a mosque at Ground Zero in New York City. Newt Gingrich, a former professor of history and possessor of a doctorate, blasted the very idea of allowing a mosque to be constructed on the sacred ground of Ground Zero, and noted, “there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia.” OK, so, there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia, now that Dr. Gingrich has spelled out this important point, what the hell does it have to do with building a house of worship? They do not allow women to drive cars in Saudi Arabia, which logically should lead to the conclusion that women in America should not be allowed to drive cars. Newt Gingrich is a scholar, but he places gaining votes before historical reasoning. He panders to every kook and nut in the Republican party because to this man, who never served his nation in the armed forces, self and party come before nation. Those who serve the United States take a solemn oath to uphold the Constitution and what it represents. A key feature of the Constitution is freedom of religion. As far as I can ascertain there is nothing in the Constitution which provides those of the Muslim faith less freedom.
A mosque is a house of worship. It is a fantastic statement having a mosque at Ground Zero. It sends a message to Muslim fanatics they have failed to gain the allegiance of American Muslims. Perhaps, it is time for DOCTOR Gingrich to revisit the meaning of scholarship.
