An editorial in the Lebanon Daily Star attacked President Bush’s proposal to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization. This is the first time a component of a nation’s armed forces have been termed to be a terrorist body. According to the editor: “It should also mark another disastrous foreign policy blunder in what is already a long list of mistakes made by the Bush administration.” The Bush approach of posturing, making threats, using sticks and tough talk “has already proven ineffectual on all fronts” noted the newspaper.
The only outcome of this latest Bush intemperate approach to foreign policy will be offering aid to conservative forces in Iran. President Ahmadinejad just lost local elections in Iran, but the Bush attack will help him rally moderate Iranians who feel insulted when an outside leader attempts to tell their nation how to function. Nothing will be gained by making lists.
