Once upon a time, a long, long time ago there was a bright young college professor who taught Constitutional law and promised America that once elected to the office of president, he would restore the basic principles of our Constitution. However, once in office, Barack Obama has become everything he once decried, government secrecy, hysteria, fear and anger are now the words he preaches. After complaints about our surveillance programs, the president promised to establish a panel that would investigate areas of weakness that allow the rights of individuals to be violated. He promised that a “high group of outside experts” would be charged with assessing all government “intelligence and communication technologies.” This sounds rather promising, asking “outside experts” to review what government officials are doing.
So, who does the president appoint? The panel will consist of Michael Morrell, recent acting head of the CIA and three former advisers of the White House. I must confess to being rather proud of the president, he did NOT ask current heads of these agencies to review their actions. Give the president some credit. Oh, Cass Sunstein, one of the appointees, once proposed hiring covert agents to “cognitively infiltrate” online groups. What ever happened to that constitutional professor? Anyone seen him??
