It was just another attack by Taliban soldiers and the result was not significant in terms of killed or wounded. At least 11 insurgents died in their attempt to breach the defenses of the air field while several US soldiers were wounded an a civilian contractor killed. A minor engagement by any standard of fighting. But, the assault was significant in that a complex attack simultaneously directed at various points of the American defenses and the ability of the Taliban to hold down American forces for five hours. In theory, the dispatch of 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan was supposed to reduce the effectiveness of the Taliban, but there is no evidence that anything other than INCREASED fighting is occurring.
Let’s face reality. There is no sign of “winning the war in Afghanistan,” and most probably we will be fighting insurgents into the next decade. The military solution has not, nor will it work. Is it time to investigate other solutions?
