Mission Accomplished Once Again!

Seven years ago, President Bush promised the American people he would get Osama bin Laden, “dead or alive.”
Five years ago, he told the world “Mission Accomplished” with the defeat of Saddam Hussein who, only in the confused mind of the president, had some connection with the capture and defeat of Osama bin Laden. Now, in the waning days of his administration, George Bush is as defiant as ever in his determination to get Oaama bin Laden “dead or alive.” He has enlisted support of British forces in a last ditch effort to get the elusive target of his anger. The London Times reports this past weekend, President Bush has reached out to British forces and a massive effort is now underway in the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan to capture Osama. The combined American-British operation is using Predator and Reaper unmanned air vehicles outfitted with Hellfire missiles that can pinpoint targets in order to capture or kill the al-Qaida leader.

There is no doubt Bush seeks to capture Osama bin Laden in order to justify the deaths of 4,000 American soldiers and the wounding of 30,000. He would love to present John McCain with a picture of a handcuffed Osama bin Laden in order to prove the entire Iraq venture was somehow a successful one. Unfortunately, the president seven years later still doesn’t grasp that Osama bin Laden was the enemy of Saddam Hussein, not his friend. The Iraq fiasco had nothing to do with al-Qaida.

Obviously, it will be difficult for Bush to stand on an aircraft carrier and tell America Mission Accomplished in Afghanistan even as fighting in that nation accelerates.
