Top Pentagon leaders are expected to soon recommend that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates should order hundreds of additional US troops in Afghanistan in the coming months to take advantage of good weather in that nation. Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said, “Commanders want to take advantage of this fighting season and would like more troops to do so.” Units including engineers, ordinance disposal troops and other support forces would be included in reinforcements. It is expected new troops would require significant training since fighting in Iran is quite different from what they are accustomed to in Iraq. American leaders in Afghanistan have been asking for about 10,000 additional troops for some time due to lack of sufficient forces to cope with growing militant attacks .
On one hand, President Bush has made clear his primary focus is the war in Iraq, one that he began for no apparent reason, but one that he intends to “win.” A few days ago, Iraq’s Ambassador to the United States, Samir Sumaida, said “we have heard reports recently that many of the foreign fighters that were in iraq have left, either back to their homeland or going to fight in Afghanistan.”
The Bush wars are non-ending. Just as one witnesses reduction in violence, a new one intensifies in violence.
