The old expression, “don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes,” has been replaced in Washington with “don’t comment until you see the results of opinion polls.” President Obama entered the mosque fray by commenting people had a right to build a house of worship on private property, but when polls revealed he had made a boo boo and angered the nation, the president beat an undignified retreat. Ordinarily, Republicans are staunch defenders of private property, but in this case they want the government to force owners of private property to be denied the right to use it for religious purposes. Democratic Senate leader, Harry Reid issued a statement that the mosque “should be built someplace else.” Like in Baghdad, we assume. Newt Gingrich, former college professor who supposedly taught students about the Constitution apparently would fail a test in his own course. He argued that “Nazis don’t have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust Museum,” nor do Japs have a right to establish a memorial in Pearl Harbor.
The nation of Germany, not twenty Germans, killed six million Jews. The nation of Japan, not twenty Japanese, launched the attack on Pearl Harbor. If we follow the Gingrich argument to its logical conclusion, if twenty people from Ireland who are Catholics, rob a bank in Manhattan to raise funds for the IRA, then ALL IRISH people should be banned from building churches in Manhattan. This is from a man who has a doctorate and taught about the American Constitution!!
