Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is once again ranting about his greatness as a leader and how Iran can do what she pleases without fear of other nations. He made clear to Israel, “we do not take seriously the threats of the Zionists.” He assured fellow Iranians “Iran will not be damaged by foreign bombs.” On one hand, the man who knows only boasting and threatening urges western nations to enter into negotiations, on the other hand he claims his nation can wipe out Israel.
Of course, Mahmoud has an interpretation of Middle Eastern history that is not very historical. He claims Jews have only been in the region for “60 to 70 years.” Actually, there were Jews in Palestine for a few thousand years and the census for Jerusalem in 1898 showed 27,000 Jews to 9,000 Muslims. It was in the 1880s that leaders of the Ottoman Empire encouraged Jewish immigration to Palestine which they regarded as economically backward and hoped Jews would stimulate economic development.
Ahmadinejad boasts and rants. It is a mistake to take him seriously. Iran is not going to launch a pre-emptive strike knowing that Israel has dozens of atomic bombs and submarine capability of launching missiles. Firmness, calmness are needed in region.
