The clique of generals who have ruled Myanmar(formerly, Burma) have been very rigid when it comes to human rights. They don’t believe in that concept. However, General Thein assumed power and suddenly he began to act like a real human. Yesterday, he announced the release of many political prisoners including a famour comedian and a monk who fought for human rights.
Among those freed were supporters of opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi who welcomed the apparent shift in policy. Hopefully, this is not a false sign of human rights. It is now time for the United States to demonstrate support for any actions leading to democracy and end sanctions against Burma.
