Future generations of Israelis will look back on this year as the time when hope for peace with Palestinians came to a dead end. Talks between the US and the Israel government about ways to resume peace talks have collapsed according to a senior Israel official. President Obama offered military incentives to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but he rejected any offer other than do it my way or no way. Netanyahu has allies in the Republican party and sees no reason to compromise with the US, Palestinians or anyone.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak in a rather curious statement declared: “We have not reached understanding with the United States on how to resume the construction freeze. The negotiations with the Palestinians are of utmost priority for Israel and we must aspire to make them happen.” Huh?
Peace talks for Israel officialis mean we get our way and your way is our way or there is no way to do any way.
