As a native born New Yorker who has left the confines of that wonderful city, I am impressed with Mayor Boris Johnson of London who is fed up with cars polluting his city. He is threatening to ban cars from many parts of London due to the high level of pollution in those areas. London with 7.5 million residents has the worst record for nitrogen dioxide pollutents of any major European city. In fact, the European Union is considering fining the city.
I was in New York City on September 12, 2001, a day after the bombing and was impressed that New York residents were banned for several days from driving their cars into the city. The vast majority of New Yorkers or those on Long Island found ways to get to work by taking trains or, in some cases, walking to work. How about just banning cars from all major cities? In America, we could initiate a massive program of having trains from the suburbs run just like subways-every five minutes!
Just remember, walking to work is cheaper and makes you healthy.
