The ongoing saga of Zimbabwe continues when main rivals failed to reach an agreement even though they were meeting at the Southern Africa Development Community(SADC) summit meeting. George Sibotshiwe, of the Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) stated bluntly: “We’re finished” because President Mugabe will not surrender power to control the Cabinet and refuses to clarify how long the transitional government would remain in place. Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the MDC, said “It’s better not to have a deal than to have a bad deal.” President Mbeki of South Africa emerges from failure to secure an agreement with his reputation damaged in the eyes of his nation and the world. He backed his close friend, Mugabe, and in so doing destroyed his own standing as a man of integrity.
The ball is now in the court of the SADC. Will they allow Mugabe to get away with stealing an election and brutalizing his people? Botswana boycotted the SADC summit meeting because the organization refused to protect the people of Zimbabwe. Will Mugabe’s behavior finally persuade the SADC to take action?
