A very unconfirmed report from Russian National Security Council Secretary, Nikolai Patrushhev, suggests the United States and Turkey are discussing the possibility of a “no fly zone” in Syria in order to halt the bloodbath unleashed by President Bashar al-Assad. He interprets Turkey’s decision to break its once cordial relations with Syria due to mass killings and a desire to block the spread of Iran’s influence in the Middle East.
We suspect the Russian official has things ass backwards. A no fly zone would have nothing to do with Iran, and everything to do with Turkeys desire to establish itself as guardian of Muslim rights in the Middle East to have Islamic democratic governments. Frankly, we doubt any such zone would be created without specific authorization of the United Nations. And, guess which country on the Security Council would veto such a move?
