The arrogance of power displayed by President Ahmadinejad increasingly displays the face of a man who believes himself in position of the “truth” and anyone, and, when Ahmadinejad says anyone, he means even the sons and daughters of those who fought to overthrow the dictatorship of the Shah. Halssan Lahouti, grandson of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a leader in the fight against the Shah, was placed under arrest for participating in the June demonstrations against the government. Rafsanjani heads the Assembly of Experts and is a political rival of Ahmadinejad, must now watch as his grandson is sent to prison on trumped up charges of “committing breaches against the establishment.” Whatever, that means.
The current situation in Iran demonstrates what when true believers who claim to hate evil and dictatorship assume power, more often than not, they eventually become everything they originally hated. We suspect Rafsanjani now understands that irony of history.
