Barack Obama has displayed signs of caution in many aspects of his performance as president. For years he has attempted to hedge concerning the issue of gay marriage. “I have hesitated in gay marriage in part because I thought that civil unions would be sufficient.” Alas, such is not the case when the state of North Carolina passes laws forbidding either marriage or civil unions.
The president finally bit the bullet and spoke from his heart. “It is important for me personally to go ahead and affirm that same sex couples should be able to get married.” In a sense, the statement simply is a continuation of the civil rights campaign of Martin Luther King. We can not be a healthy democratic society until all Americans have the right to freedom from hunger, disease, and education.
