Among the constant myths concerning the Second Amendment is the recurring claim that Americans in 1776 were oppressed by the government of England and that is why individuals needed guns. American colonists had free access to guns throughout the time from initially landing on the North American shores. Guns were required since they had invaded land then in possession of Indian tribes. They also required guns to hunt for food. In those areas where slaves were part of the scene, there was need for guns in case of rebellions. Actor Danny Glover aroused anger among Texas conservatives for making similar comments.
“I don’t know if people know the reasons of the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment comes from the right to protect themselves from slave revolts and from uprisings from Native Americans.” In other words from the right to protect selves from people whose land was stolen and from people who were brought to America as slaves. Conservatives are up on arms over these common sense words.
Actually, in 1776 American colonists had the right of free speech, the right of free press, the highest standard of living in the world, the best educated people in the world, the right to freely elect local leaders- and the rich to bear arms. Yes, they were terribly oppressed.
