The war in Libya is entering final stages and it simply a matter of time before the last supporter of Muammar Gaddafi has laid down his arms and fighting ceases. Or, at least, fighting ceases for the moment. Abdelhakim Belhaj, head of the Tripoli Military Council, is in charge of cleaning up the situation in the capitol city. The former Islamist fighter against Gaddafi told the media those loyal to Gaddafi are being wiped out step by step. He expects within days to capture the final Gaddafi stronghold in Sirte and being the war to an end.
Belhaj has gained enormous popularity due to his military ability and is held in high regard by those who fought against the dictator. However, Belhaj is connected with fundamentalist Muslim groups including the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group which has been linked to al-Qaeda. Will he emerge and become a figure of power in the new government? Will he represent an al-Qaeda presence in the government of Libya?
The future will reveal what was the real meaning of the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi!
