Syrian President Bashar Assad has indicated a willingness to enter into peace talks with Israel but insists Prime Minister Olmert must make some type of public announcement of his desire to seriously negotiate for peace. Assad dismissed President Bush’s call for an International Middle Eastern Peace Conference as so much meaningless words.
Peace is possible, but the United States must publicly announce its support for the Arab Peace Initiative and inform Israel there will be need to accept an end to the West Bank settlements. The question is whether or not, Bush has the courage to follow up on Bill Clinton’s efforts to negotiate a peace in the Middle East. Peace requires compromise, and it requires evacuation of West Bank settlements.
