Al-Ahram reports that President Mubarak is giving full support to Prime Minister Abbas, leader of the Fatah Palestinians in its struggle with Hamas. Mubarak has tried to persuade Hamas to give up control of the Gaza strip and reach out to the Abbas led Fatah group in order to present a united front to Israel in negotiations, but has been rejected. There are elements within Fatah which also want reconciliation with Hamas but Abbas is still furious at having his forces overthrown in the Gaza strip.
For many years it has been said the worse enemy of Palestinians is themselves, not Israel. Failure to unite only strengthens the bargaining position of Israel.
