Protect Gay Military Rights Insist Gay Republicans

Log Cabin Republicans, a group who undoubtedly will not be regarded by members of Congress such as Senator John McCain, are determined to fight for the right of those in the military who are gay or lesbian. As attorney Don Woods notes, “we’re trying to get this changed right away. After all, there are people today dying for our country while their constitutional rights are violated.” His group seeks to challenge the constitutionality of the infamous, “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy which requires discharging any gay or lesbian member of the military who openly states their sexual beliefs. The Justice Department has made clear it will defend the constitutionality of the existing law even though President Obama seeks to have it changed by Congress.

The entire issue of “allowing” gays and lesbians to serve their nation is somewhat ludicrous. Men and women are willing to risk their lives at a time when less than one percent of the population has such an attitude should result in happiness for their decision to be in the armed forces. Any American who voluntarily joins the military deserves the thanks of the nation. Period.
