The tragedy of Sergeant Robert Bales has no simple conclusion. He committed a terrible crime for which one can not “explain away.” Yes, he had four deployments, yes, he was wounded, yes, he witnessed and experienced horrible sights, but in the end, there is no excuse for killing innocent women and children. During the coming years, writers, psychologists, theologians, and countless others will offer explanations for these brutal murders, but, what Bales did was NOT unusual for those who lived in the 20th century.
