The people of Russia have awakened from their slumber which has lasted for over a decade. A new sense of desiring democracy is in the air. Over 50,000 people were in Bolotnaya Square in Moscow to protest fraudulent elections for parliament which witnessed Putin’s United Russia party get 49% of the vote when most observers believe it is actually at least ten points lower. But, when one controls government, one can control election outcomes. People held signs expressing their anger: “Russia Without Putin” or “Freedom.”
For many in the crowd. it was their first participation in a political event. Maria told a member of the media: “I was never interested in politics until I saw how they violate our human rights, the politicians work in their own interest, not for the people.”
Will there be a new –and honest– election is the question?
