President Vladmir Putin of Russia is aghast at history books that don’t portray his regime in a favorable light or which offer a negative cast about Russia’s past. One of the education tragedies of Russia is failure to deal honestly and objectively with the communist era. The atrocities of Dictator Joseph Stalin are glossed over and the persecution of people are ignored.
Ironically, of all the nations which have best confronted their past is Germany. German educators discuss the Holocaust openly and want the present generation to fully comprehend what past generations did or did not do. The object is not to make young people feel guilty, but to create a sense that each nation should be honest about its past and present. Now, if we could get George Bush to allow Congress access to some of his files, then…. Actually, then we would see several Republicans headed off to jail.
