The state church of Norway has found itself embroiled in a conflict over the presence of one of their ministers in the town of Oppdal which is in the mountains. The local church leader has come under sharp criticism after he prevented a pastor, who originally comes from Sierra Leone, from participating in several funerals because relatives did not want a black skin pastor having anything to do with the final send off of their dead relative. Pastor Joseph Moiba has been told by local residents, that people like himself, “don’t fit in Norway” and the pastor has been physically and verbally abused. Nils-Tore Andersen, leader of the state church council, Kirkeradet, is shocked because in his view, the church should be a leader in the fight against racism.
Andersen’s reaction to family complaints concerning a black skinned man participating in funerals was “we try to meet the wishes of families in a funeral, but there’s a limit.” Andersen was upset the local pastor acceded to requests of families and barred Moiba from participating in several funerals.
Moiba is on a sick leave due to stress caused by the incidents and he fears they will resume when he returns to duty. One can only wonder how such intensity of feeling can emerge from people who have so little contact with Africans.

I usually find that Scandinavians are nice people, especially Norwegians. However, I know that Europeans for the most part have problems with black people. That’s ignorance because when they come to my country, which is predominantly black, we treat them nicely. Adequate education on different cultures is the key. They don’t get that on that side of the world. I should know, I lived there.

Maybe it’s time an actual Norwegian wrote something here. Norwegians are generally not racist, and won’t assault you or call you “nigger” if a bleck person is walking down the street. However, Norway has recently experienced problems due to a rise in criminal immigrants from areas such as Somalia, and there is no use in hiding the fact that people here are generally more sceptic to Somalians than others. Another reason for this view of Norwegian racism may very well be the totally moronic actions of our government, which is for the most deporting honest, hard-working immigrants and letting the guys driving around in their stolen BMW’s wearing heavy jewelry and selling dope stay.
In general one can say that in more rural provinces, espesially in the north, racism is more widespread. But come to some of the larger cities where foreign people actually are repsresented in some grade, and you will see a much larger grade of acceptance than you’d expect after reading this. And no; Oppdal is not considered a city, and easily falls under the category “rural area where immigrants are an unusual sight and people are generelly less educated than in the cities”.
So if you come to Norway and feel you’re being treated cold, don’t feel unwelcome. We Norwegians just are that we. We don’t say a word if we’re in an elevator with strangers, avoid looking strangers in the eyes and will do basically everything to find a seat on the bus where nobody is already sitting. Pretty screwed up, I know, but hey; it’s Norway!

Norway is beautiful, just like the rest of scandinavia I have generally found that norwegians do not particually like racism, whereas us europeans aren’t as REFINED, Britain has the highest rate for underage smoking, drinking, drug abuse I mean, hell, just about everybody I went to school with was a drugee and I was living in the upper middle class area! A reaction like that would probably be caused by the immigration in the country. We Scandinavians have for the last 200 years behaved pretty calm and civilized. Tourists usually find us to be happy and cheerful. However, ever since the massimmigration and multiculturism started crimes such as rape, murder, robberies, muggings and drugselling have gone sky high. It is raised over 300%. The immigrants comes from the Middle East and Africa in huge waves and we see and hear about their actions every day, while theyre trying to convert everyone to Islam. The streets used to be safe, and criminality was almost none existant. This new immigration means that we scandinavians will be a minority in our countries within 50 years.
So,, sorry if we’re a little edgy and not as nice and cheerful anymore. Its hard to melt these new countries we’re living in. And my guess is that the people at the funeral probably didnt want to be reminded of our miserable future at that time. Its nothing personal to dark people.

I’m Norwegian living in USA at the moment. My girlfriend is a black American that grew up in the Caribbean. I met her here in the US 3 years ago, one year after moving here for a temporary work-assignment for my company. The work-assignment is soon done, and time for me (us!) to head back — which is how I ended up reading these comments.
Many of you that wrote a comment here; wake up, it’s 2009. How can you still be so narrow-minded? When I moved from Norway 12 years ago when I was 17, I clearly remember that there were a touch of racism everywhere (in Norway) — I might even have used the word “pakkis” a few times myself. But that’s more than 12 years ago, we are smarter and more knowledgeable now, right?
Seeing things from the outside, it is very obvious to me that Norwegians are very VERY spoiled. I hope you are aware that we (Norwegians) would probably be farmers and fishermen if it wasn’t for the oil. I would probably never had the chance to work abroad if hadn’t received the top quality education I received in Norway for free. The oil made us rich, it’s not because we are smarter then anyone else, it’s because we have money!
I understand that we don’t want the country to be taken by someone else, who would? But we have to start trusting other people and not just draw conclusion and generalize based on initial emotions when reading the newspaper or watching TV about “race-relate” crimes. Crime is not a genetic thing, people’s behaviour is shaped by upbringing and the environment you live in. If you had grown up in Somalia you wouldn’t necessarily see all Somalians as criminal. You have to be smarter than that, ask yourself the question why these minorities are behaving like they do. You have to dig deeper and put yourself in their position. A good hint would be that crime is in most cases are related to poverty and unemployment, and the poverty among immigrants in Norway might be because there are people, like some of you, that don’t wont to accept them and help them integrate in the society. You generalize and judge them too early. Separate criminals from non-criminals, white or colored. Ask yourself questions before judging, get educated, travel to meet other cultures, and don’t hate because that limits yourself and makes your own life suck.
And please, don’t believe that anyone will come and take the country. But if you do believe that, then you have two choice; 1) you have to fight them now (like Hitler did with the Jews), or 2) be good to them, and they will be good to you when they “take over”. Fear creates hate.

We didn’t start to earn money from our oil activities before the 1980′s. The first years the state was spending loads of money to develop the offshore oil industry. The majority was well off long before the 80′s and the majority was not farmers or fishermen so stop portraying us as some kind of poor fools who won the lottery. Danes and Swedes are rich too, is that luck as well?

-Vietnamese and Indian immigrants are involved in less crime than native Norwegians, they don’t go around raping and harassing women because they wear to little clothes and they don’t form criminal gangs who terrorize their neighborhoods.
-Somali and pakistani immigrants got the same benefits and possibilities as any other immigrant group entering our country. Making excuses for them will not make the problem go away. No other country in the world give new countrymen more benefits than we do, is it too much to ask that they in return follow the law and stop treating women as cattle? I think the reason some groups don’t integrate into our society is the difference in culture/religion. Buddhists and hindus mix well with us atheists up here, whereas Muslims seem to be shocked by our society and quickly become alienated to it. What is the solution? Adapt our society to their expectations? I’m sorry but I don’t want my daughter to be treated as a 2nd class citizen in her own country, I want my jewish neighbour to feel safe here in his own country, I want to be able to critisize any religion without being attacked physically etc.

Folks, I hear and feel for you. Am a black man and an African but that is as far as I will go for generalisation. In effect I grew up in a screwed up country but I can say we are a decent people and will not behave like other African nationalities. The do gooders of the west have failed both your nations and black people in general by importing bus loads of people because they signed some UN convention about refugees. I for one have never understood what purpose it is that a bunch of people who don’t even speak your language or aspire to assimilate in your society get moved from their hell hole to your country. Let it be known that there are some nationalites that will never be ok in any country aprt from their own. That is, Somalians are the last people that any country should resettle. Violence is genetically coded be it women or men. And worst of all, their culture recognises physical abuse more than it does dialogue. About four hundred years ago, the concept of being prejudiced against those with darker skins crept into European society. However, it was also present in the Middle East since Arab slave traders brought in over five million black skinned people. This concept was not common in ancient times, and hopefully, will eventually die out. In the meantime people have to deal with bigotry.

My experience as limited as it is (LOL) leasd me to a few conclusions: 1) if you really want to visit Norway or anywhere else, don’t be incapscitated by fear. DO IT! Go! Don’t let what other people think of your skin deter you from doing or being execllent, or even pursuing your dreams.
2) Don’t believe everything you read or hear, believe what you experience for yourself, form your own opinion. But, do take other peoples advice with a grain of salt.
I am from Jamaica, ( obviously a black woman). I can say that the little racism I have experienced while living in the US has not CHANGED a thing about me. I am secure in who and what I know I am. Every person is ENTITLED to think and believe WHATEVER they want. If a man wants to call me a slut/nigger/bitch/ whatever…suit yourself..I know I am not any of those. As for funerals, a family has the right to mourn as they please, too bad the priest go butt hurt about not being wanted at the funreral. I am a nurse and if patients don’t want a black nurse to care for them…I RESPECT YOUR WISHES….( with the exception of life and death emergencies…at that point if you wish to live, I can save you…LOL)
I met a man from Norway, he was visiting Hawaii when I lived there. He was very nice to me, seemed interested in making friends of every ethnicity. I like him, and he is still my friend. I know that most people are nice and friendly, but at is all in the way you handle a difficult situation.

Its in the bible, Jews and Gentiles, Egyptians and Israelites…its not new and it wont ever go away until the Jesus comes again (ooops, I am a Christian too…LOL). I know we can’t ignore it, but we can teach our children about other cultures and expose them to other cultures. When I was moving to Kentucky ( kkk capital of the US) I was worried about what would happen to my son and how he would be treated. I teach teachers in southern rural Missouri which is a hotbed of neo-Nazis types. Most people I encounter understand America has changed and wish to go along with changes. I was invited to give a presentation in a rural Missouri high school where people had never actually seen a Jew. We had an interesting educational experience. One result was some teachers took their students to the St. Louis Holocaust Center.

Well I think the priest should have understood that he was in an environment where it would take time to get used to someone who is different. All small towns are resistant towards people who are different and the difference does not have to be racial. The worse way to try and bridge cultural or ethnic differences is to force the issue. If someone doesn’t want a black priest to supervise over their dead relatives funeral, it may hurt but it should be respected. Acceptance comes with time. As a woman of color I can say from experience that Norwegians are much more liberal and show less racism than in the States.

Most Norwegians aren’t racists. I don’t care about skin colour at all, and neither do my family, my friends and most of the other people I know. I think some people are scared of black people just because they aren’t used to them, because they are different. The city I live in is quite big, but I still don’t see black people very often, and I’ve only talked to a black person once. She was very friendly, and I really liked her. So please don’t think that all of us are racists, because we are not.

I am a black man with a dual American and Swiss citizenship. I have lived in Germany, Switzerland and England for more than 29 years. Of the 29 years, I have lived mostly in Switzerland and Germany for more than 25 years. I am very much aware that every society has to a certain degree its woes with the race issue and this will probably never change. As I stumbled across this story, I remembered the time when I had to conduct, as a black priesthood holder, a total number of three funerals in Switzerland. All three families were Swiss. One of which was my best Swiss friend. Two of the funerals were conducted for the elderly in the Swiss Alps. Family members attended the funerals were from Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, America, etc. Fortunately, no one objected to the fact that a black man was conducting the funeral of there beloved ones. And if they had done so, I would not have minded. This is there family member and I think that every family has their free agency. This is the greatest gift that our Heavenly Father has given us. What greater gift can we receive than this? Let us respect the choices that families make on behalf of their beloved ones. Even though I speak the German and Swiss German languages fluent, I am quite sure that my American accent will never be forgotten. But, try to imagine a black man standing at the altar in an historical Swiss church hundreds of years old in the Swiss Alps conducting Swiss funerals for Swiss families. Yes, I know it is hard to imagine. At the time, I was the branch president for our church. I was told that I was probably the first black man in Switzerland to lead a congregation of Swiss, Scandinavians, Germans, Americans, Africans, etc. I was in the branch presidency for a period of 7 years+. This was a wonderful experience for me and I was trusted by the majority and cannot remember any of the members going against me. I personally think that it has a lot to do with how one approach the other person and lot to do with a positive attitude. I am also aware that everyone will not agree with my words, but on a scale of 1 – 10, I must admit that my family and I have been treated in Europe on a scale of 8 – 10. We should not confuse someone having a bad day or some other type of problems with racism. Now, I am very much aware that there are evil people in the world we live and evil things do and will happen. Racism will always exist in our societies. However, it really depends on our individual approach to such problems. Bitterness and hate has never made anyone happy, but rather sad. I have travel to Norway with my family within the last 9 years seven times and I love the Norwegian people and their beautiful country. I have traveled from the most southern to the most northern parts of Norway. I have visited and stayed in places such as Kristiansand, Mandal, Farsund, Stavanger, Kvinesdal, Lyngdal, Lindesnes, Oslo, Alvdal, Tynset, Tolga, Röros, Stören, Midtre Gaudal, Melhus, Trondheim, Steinkjer, Namsos, Namsskogan, Mo i Rana, Skutvik, Elvesnes, Solvaer, Digermulen, Arstein (Digermulen), Lödingen, Flakstad, Harstad, Molda, Alesund, Sogndal, Laerdal, Hemesdal, Gol. Just to name a few. My visits have been in the spring, summer, fall and winter. I have traveled thousands of miles with my family of 8 to Norway. Last year, my sister and father flew in from Houston, Texas to spend 2 weeks with us in Oslo, Tolga, Stören and Trondheim. They really enjoyed themselves. Our Norwegian friends went out of their way to make my father and sister feel welcome. My stays in Norway have been between 2 – 5 weeks at a time. I am a fly fisher and enjoy fishing in the Fjords and off the coast of Svolvaer. Having said this I am not naive, I do know that there are people that have a problem for the various reasons, but we cannot give up on the goodness that we all carry within. I am currently planning my next fly fishing trip to Norway. And plan to travel to Kenya, Namibia and other parts of Africa soon.

I said i’am not a muslim. then one said “fine unless you show us some a passport or something we might get a bit rough”. i showed them my passport (lucky i had it) they looked at it and said oh my “fucking god he has become a Norwegian” then they said “atleast he isn’t a terorrist”. they walked away. from the way they were dressed they looked like skinheads. they walked off shouting racist chants. i could not make out what they were. 4 months later i was just walking in a street again. going to somewhere i cannot remember. i overheard 2 people talking about sports. one said “yes that nigger ran well “. i was shocked that people use that word but i do not think it is seen as racist here. my friend came to Bergen this time. we talked about the immigration. he brought a friend. he said “right, Immigration is geting a bit too much”. my friend then said ” no immigration is fine aslong as no one commits any crime. i said to him ” what do you mean”?. he answrd my

I am from Brazil, white skin, PhD and scientist but can not work in Norway as a professional yet. I work in a hospital , washing floors and helping patients in a little island.
I had problems with a “not reveald” racism. some of the staff never have talked with me until know that i have some kind of education. They dont give me enough job, but give to the others from Europe even they have the same or less knowledge of the language as me.

Norwegians are afraid of foreigners. Any kind of foreigner. They are xenophobics at the end of the day. I am Norwegian and have lived abroad and I am back living in Norway and can’t wait to leave again. This place has positive attributes, such as good housing, clean air, nature, relatively low crime. HOWEVER, the people, and the attitude of the people here is very suffocating. On the whole they aren’t friendly. Best of luck to anyone moving here.

As an American I’m trying really hard not to let the Internet trolls who have posted to this board lower my opinion of Europeans. Some of you seem like inbred trailer-trash, rednecks from the US.
Immigration in general leads to some initial resistance/tension and then assimilation. Too bad some governments don’t take this into consideration. I’m clearly not against immigration, but it should be handled more thoughtfully and gradually. Immigrants of any color should be welcomed to any land as long as they seek education and honest work opportunities. They should also learn the local language as quickly as possible and through whatever means are necessary.
Of course, some people will always be stupid, hateful bastards. Racism will never completely go away, but it can and should decrease!

Compared to the rest of the world, USA and Britan included Norway is a non racist paradise where all skin colours and cultures are welcome. Sure racists and racism exist but the number of incidents are miniscule compared to any other country, all schools have black students all cities have black citizens. Organized racism is illigal, neo-nazi organisations are clamped down upon and unlike your forgeiners most of us are actually willing to speak up and stop hatespeach, not just some fringe activists here and there but significant parts of the population. That an (supposed) educator is trying to paint an entire country as racist is just shamefull. Yes. Norway, and Scandinavia as a whole is probably the most liberal place on earth.
And yes, the massimmigration started only a few years ago. And yes, Scandinavia is losing its glamour because of it.
Considering that the Scandinavian people is genetically being wiped out with this mass immigration, as we speak, we are still extremely nice and open, for being on the brink of destruction.

The type of language that is being used is just shoking, if you would not used that kind of language in the streets then why use it on the interent, and i am danish and think don’t think that norwegains are anymore racists then us danes, and i dont like racists and dont think that will help either of our scandinavian countries. A majority of these comments are mainly focused on racism upon black people but does anyone know how Asians are treated in Norway? Like, what do Norwegians think of them? I’m an Asian living in Canada and I’m treated quite well. Canada is very multicultured anyway. My English is fluent (moved to Canada when I was 4) so that’s not a problem. I truly believe Norway is a great country.

This is a VERY UNCOMMON behaviour in Norway! I could hardly believe it when i read it, but then again, it’s from a norwegian newspaper, and they are reporting such stuff immediately. I live in a bigger place with people from other countries, asians and black. I have never heard or seen anything like this. it IS Illegal!
Noone support this racist of a priest! And no, such acts of racism is not allowed in Norway, the entire society will be very upset over such cases. Norwegians started a facebook group for him, to support him. Noone had problems to have a black priest in their funerals, for gods sake. You don’t know what you’re talking about. I am a norwegian, from Oslo. Some people are jerks, but mostly against Muslims, like else in Europe. This is the freakin main problem in Europe today, and i really want these nasty racist jerks to move out from the country. This is also a country where there are many small anti-racistic movements. It’s a very free and expensive country. Norwegians are absolutely not as evil as americans. Most of us are peacefull and do not want any harm. No fox news here, no Bill O’really, or Bush. Uhmm,i am somali and norwegian. I have never experienced racism by norwegians becasue of my brown skin or racial background. i have lived in Oslo&Bergen my whole life. My mother speaks norwegian just as good as my father and works as a full-time engineer, most norwegians think that all immigrants live on their taxes and that the welfare-system saves their life, but that is far from the truth.Most norwegians despite pakistani people but on the other hand , they are the most-sucsessful immigrants and many of them have great jobs and good lives without issues and live as respectable norwegian citizens here.The thing is that norwegians far up north from the “bondelandet”(farmers) behave like that, my own grandmother said to me ” a n***** moved into our neighbourhood and i am scared” she is my grandmother and i love her but she is close minded/ prejeduicje , old and lives in a premantory white community, she is just scared of what she seen on the tv….Many norwegians like to generalize especially somali people and pakistani (actually all muslims) people, but if you look at the government stats there are more “white” people that do crimes like murder,rape etc.
Many norwegians should be ashamed of themselves, when i hear some of them talk they are starting to talk about muslims like the nazis did with the jews.My father is a teacher at the university here and once he showed his class a bunch of articles about muslims that were written in the uk and scandinavia and most of them didnt think much about them, he got some old papers from 1941 + and the articles ( one of them was like ” muslims wanna have sharia laws and stop christmas celebration in uk” the same was found about jews that was written by a nazi) about the jews back then.The similarity beteew them was shocking and most of these students were ashamed of themselves……. its something that is unconsious i guess.I dont know how people can write such things,i celebrate chrismas with my family and also islamic celebrations aswell, i dont know what this hype is really about.However, many good norwegians and bad norwegians you cant generalize a whole country.
All in all , i have just come across lovely and open-minded norwegians and no one should cancel their trips :O

Reading some of these comments is enough to make someone sad about the future of the world. Norway has a positive side which isnt reflected in some responses about foreigners. However, I have visited other European countries and sometimes what is called ‘special treatment’ in Norway is considered normal in for example, Holland. I hope one day all people in the world will be able to face each other on the basis of respect and equal
standing.
