Racism In Norway Where There Are Few Black Faces

Where is the logic? I thought a Norwegian could be relied upon for sound logic. What is the meaning of “black skin” – in Norway?

Is this the reaction I should expect when I visit Norway in a few months time?

I guess that’s fair, though. I mean, to be honest, I don’t want any vikings showing up at my funeral.

I’ve been reading about norway and wow.. It seems like norway society is very immature on civil rights. If here in America anyone would do half of what I’ve read some people do to non-white people in norway, you could get suited, not to say sent to jail.

I usually find that Scandinavians are nice people, especially Norwegians. However, I know that Europeans for the most part have problems with black people. That’s ignorance because when they come to my country, which is predominantly black, we treat them nicely. Adequate education on different cultures is the key. They don’t get that on that side of the world. I should know, I lived there.

Maybe it’s time an actual Norwegian wrote something here. Norwegians are generally not racist, and won’t assault you or call you “nigger” if a bleck person is walking down the street. However, Norway has recently experienced problems due to a rise in criminal immigrants from areas such as Somalia, and there is no use in hiding the fact that people here are generally more sceptic to Somalians than others. Another reason for this view of Norwegian racism may very well be the totally moronic actions of our government, which is for the most deporting honest, hard-working immigrants and letting the guys driving around in their stolen BMW’s wearing heavy jewelry and selling dope stay.

In general one can say that in more rural provinces, espesially in the north, racism is more widespread. But come to some of the larger cities where foreign people actually are repsresented in some grade, and you will see a much larger grade of acceptance than you’d expect after reading this. And no; Oppdal is not considered a city, and easily falls under the category “rural area where immigrants are an unusual sight and people are generelly less educated than in the cities”.

So if you come to Norway and feel you’re being treated cold, don’t feel unwelcome. We Norwegians just are that we. We don’t say a word if we’re in an elevator with strangers, avoid looking strangers in the eyes and will do basically everything to find a seat on the bus where nobody is already sitting. Pretty screwed up, I know, but hey; it’s Norway!

Norway is beautiful, just like the rest of scandinavia I have generally found that norwegians do not particually like racism, whereas us europeans aren’t as REFINED, Britain has the highest rate for underage smoking, drinking, drug abuse I mean, hell, just about everybody I went to school with was a drugee and I was living in the upper middle class area! But I am seriously glad that priest isn’t living in britain, He wouldn’t last long here poor guy…

Im borned and raised in norway. Im indian and lived here all my life. There may be some prejeduse in the norwegian comunity but there is almost no rasism at social level, most dont care abt my dark skincolor. Political rasism does exist in form of a political party known as “FRP”.

The streets used to be safe, and criminality was almost none existant. This new immigration means that we scandinavians will be a minority in our countries within 50 years.

So,, sorry if we’re a little edgy and not as nice and cheerful anymore. Its hard to melt these new countries we’re living in. And my guess is that the people at the funeral probably didnt want to be reminded of our miserable future at that time. Its nothing personal to dark people.

I’m Norwegian living in USA at the moment. My girlfriend is a black American that grew up in the Caribbean. I met her here in the US 3 years ago, one year after moving here for a temporary work-assignment for my company. The work-assignment is soon done, and time for me (us!) to head back — which is how I ended up reading these comments.

Many of you that wrote a comment here; wake up, it’s 2009. How can you still be so narrow-minded? When I moved from Norway 12 years ago when I was 17, I clearly remember that there were a touch of racism everywhere (in Norway) — I might even have used the word “pakkis” a few times myself. But that’s more than 12 years ago, we are smarter and more knowledgeable now, right?

Seeing things from the outside, it is very obvious to me that Norwegians are very VERY spoiled. I hope you are aware that we (Norwegians) would probably be farmers and fishermen if it wasn’t for the oil. I would probably never had the chance to work abroad if hadn’t received the top quality education I received in Norway for free. The oil made us rich, it’s not because we are smarter then anyone else, it’s because we have money!

I understand that we don’t want the country to be taken by someone else, who would? But we have to start trusting other people and not just draw conclusion and generalize based on initial emotions when reading the newspaper or watching TV about “race-relate” crimes. Crime is not a genetic thing, people’s behaviour is shaped by upbringing and the environment you live in. If you had grown up in Somalia you wouldn’t necessarily see all Somalians as criminal. You have to be smarter than that, ask yourself the question why these minorities are behaving like they do. You have to dig deeper and put yourself in their position. A good hint would be that crime is in most cases are related to poverty and unemployment, and the poverty among immigrants in Norway might be because there are people, like some of you, that don’t wont to accept them and help them integrate in the society. You generalize and judge them too early. Separate criminals from non-criminals, white or colored. Ask yourself questions before judging, get educated, travel to meet other cultures, and don’t hate because that limits yourself and makes your own life suck.

And please, don’t believe that anyone will come and take the country. But if you do believe that, then you have two choice; 1) you have to fight them now (like Hitler did with the Jews), or 2) be good to them, and they will be good to you when they “take over”. Fear creates hate.

We didn’t start to earn money from our oil activities before the 1980′s. The first years the state was spending loads of money to develop the offshore oil industry. The majority was well off long before the 80′s and the majority was not farmers or fishermen so stop portraying us as some kind of poor fools who won the lottery. Danes and Swedes are rich too, is that luck as well?

-Vietnamese and Indian immigrants are involved in less crime than native Norwegians, they don’t go around raping and harassing women because they wear to little clothes and they don’t form criminal gangs who terrorize their neighborhoods.
-Somali and pakistani immigrants got the same benefits and possibilities as any other immigrant group entering our country. Making excuses for them will not make the problem go away. No other country in the world give new countrymen more benefits than we do, is it too much to ask that they in return follow the law and stop treating women as cattle? I think the reason some groups don’t integrate into our society is the difference in culture/religion. Buddhists and hindus mix well with us atheists up here, whereas Muslims seem to be shocked by our society and quickly become alienated to it. What is the solution? Adapt our society to their expectations? Folks, I hear and feel for you. Am a black man and an African but that is as far as I will go for generalisation. In effect I grew up in a screwed up country but I can say we are a decent people and will not behave like other African nationalities. The do gooders of the west have failed both your nations and black people in general by importing bus loads of people because they signed some UN convention about refugees. I for one have never understood what purpose it is that a bunch of people who don’t even speak your language or aspire to assimilate in your society get moved from their hell hole to your country. I stumbled upon this blog out of the curiosity of what i’m up against when i resume my dream msc program in trondheim norway from far away nigeria…frankly, i still look forward to it after all…cos putting issues in perspective, norwegians, as i’ve read so far, are RELATIVELY friendly and hospitable cos i have been to other western european countries and where i feel and smell the palpable racism in the air, however diplomatic they tend to conceal it…having said that…i submit by saying: MY FOLKS AND I ARE TO BLAME!

About four hundred years ago, the concept of being prejudiced against those with darker skins crept into European society. However, it was also present in the Middle East since Arab slave traders brought in over five million black skinned people. This concept was not common in ancient times, and hopefully, will eventually die out. In the meantime people have to deal with bigotry.

My experience as limited as it is (LOL) leasd me to a few conclusions: 1) if you really want to visit Norway or anywhere else, don’t be incapscitated by fear. DO IT! Go! Don’t let what other people think of your skin deter you from doing or being execllent, or even pursuing your dreams.
2) Don’t believe everything you read or hear, believe what you experience for yourself, form your own opinion. But, do take other peoples advice with a grain of salt.
I am from Jamaica, ( obviously a black woman). I can say that the little racism I have experienced while living in the US has not CHANGED a thing about me. I am secure in who and what I know I am. Every person is ENTITLED to think and believe WHATEVER they want. If a man wants to call me a slut/nigger/bitch/ whatever…suit yourself..I know I am not any of those. As for funerals, a family has the right to mourn as they please, too bad the priest go butt hurt about not being wanted at the funreral. I met a man from Norway, he was visiting Hawaii when I lived there. He was very nice to me, seemed interested in making friends of every ethnicity. I like him, and he is still my friend. I know that most people are nice and friendly, but at is all in the way you handle a difficult situation.

Racism/prejudice has been around since early civilization. Its in the bible, Jews and Gentiles, Egyptians and Israelites…its not new and it wont ever go away until the Jesus comes again (ooops, I am a Christian too…LOL). I know we can’t ignore it, but we can teach our children about other cultures and expose them to other cultures. When I was moving to Kentucky ( kkk capital of the US) I was worried about what would happen to my son and how he would be treated. I teach teachers in southern rural Missouri which is a hotbed of neo-Nazis types. Most people I encounter understand America has changed and wish to go along with changes. I was invited to give a presentation in a rural Missouri high school where people had never actually seen a Jew. We had an interesting educational experience. One result was some teachers took their students to the St. Louis Holocaust Center.

Well I think the priest should have understood that he was in an environment where it would take time to get used to someone who is different. All small towns are resistant towards people who are different and the difference does not have to be racial. The worse way to try and bridge cultural or ethnic differences is to force the issue. If someone doesn’t want a black priest to supervise over their dead relatives funeral, it may hurt but it should be respected. Acceptance comes with time. As a woman of color I can say from experience that Norwegians are much more liberal and show less racism than in the States.

Most Norwegians aren’t racists. I don’t care about skin colour at all, and neither do my family, my friends and most of the other people I know. I think some people are scared of black people just because they aren’t used to them, because they are different. The city I live in is quite big, but I still don’t see black people very often, and I’ve only talked to a black person once. She was very friendly, and I really liked her. So please don’t think that all of us are racists, because we are not.

Some Suggestions
1. Before you encourage massive immigration from Asian, Middle Eastern, and African countries, engage in some major educational activities in your and these countries to develop REASONING skills.
2. Recognize that Europe’s discoverers, conquerors, enslavers, and colonizers engaged in a virtual cognitive holocaust in those regions of the world for over two centuries, and this has generational domino effects. Assist the South’s population with investments in education, not immigration.
3. Race is not the problem. It’s the absence of logical reasoning, sound information, and a critical disposition toward one’s religion.
4. There are no black people and white people, and no Norwegians either. Identifying oneself and others on the basis of skin color and place of birth, and religion is a Neanderthal practice that survived all the way through ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Western civilization.
5. Norwegians cannot be called “racist” for the simple reason that that word has a thousand definitions and using it only muddies discussions. Use language with clarity and argue with logical consistency and the problems we face will be seen as human problems that can be resolved.
6. It is not Somalis or Muslims that rape, steal, mug, and murder in Norway. Rather, it is human beings with low levels of literacy, bereft of sound reasoning, possibly afflicted with post-traumatic stress, committed to violence, and barely amenable to attitudinal transformation while they are resident in Norway. Such individuals should be placed in an environment where rehabilitation is more likely to be successful–their countries of origin. Prisons are not meant to rehabilitate.
7. Cease using racial, national, and ethnic adjectives to describe human beings and pathological behaviors.
8. Try placing the word “therefore” after you have classified a person, a country, or a behavior in a racial or ethnic way. For example, “I am white,” or “he is black,” therefore . . . Therefore, what? You see. It never works.
9. I am a human being. Therefore, I cannot deny this statement without being in self-contradiction.

Racism is a child its mother is called ignorance and its father is called insecurity they live in a house called fear and until their names are changed to retribution their children will all suffer and they will nevr know peace.

I am a black man with a dual American and Swiss citizenship. I have lived in Germany, Switzerland and England for more than 29 years. Of the 29 years, I have lived mostly in Switzerland and Germany for more than 25 years. I am very much aware that every society has to a certain degree its woes with the race issue and this will probably never change. As I stumbled across this story, I remembered the time when I had to conduct, as a black priesthood holder, a total number of three funerals in Switzerland. All three families were Swiss. One of which was my best Swiss friend. Two of the funerals were conducted for the elderly in the Swiss Alps. Family members attended the funerals were from Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, America, etc. Fortunately, no one objected to the fact that a black man was conducting the funeral of there beloved ones. And if they had done so, I would not have minded. This is there family member and I think that every family has their free agency. This is the greatest gift that our Heavenly Father has given us. What greater gift can we receive than this? Let us respect the choices that families make on behalf of their beloved ones. Even though I speak the German and Swiss German languages fluent, I am quite sure that my American accent will never be forgotten. But, try to imagine a black man standing at the altar in an historical Swiss church hundreds of years old in the Swiss Alps conducting Swiss funerals for Swiss families. Yes, I know it is hard to imagine. At the time, I was the branch president for our church. I was told that I was probably the first black man in Switzerland to lead a congregation of Swiss, Scandinavians, Germans, Americans, Africans, etc. I was in the branch presidency for a period of 7 years+. However, it really depends on our individual approach to such problems. Bitterness and hate has never made anyone happy, but rather sad. I have travel to Norway with my family within the last 9 years seven times and I love the Norwegian people and their beautiful country. I have traveled from the most southern to the most northern parts of Norway. Just to name a few. My visits have been in the spring, summer, fall and winter. I have traveled thousands of miles with my family of 8 to Norway. Last year, my sister and father flew in from Houston, Texas to spend 2 weeks with us in Oslo, Tolga, Stören and Trondheim. They really enjoyed themselves. Our Norwegian friends went out of their way to make my father and sister feel welcome. My stays in Norway have been between 2 – 5 weeks at a time. I am a fly fisher and enjoy fishing in the Fjords and off the coast of Svolvaer. Having said this I am not naive, I do know that there are people that have a problem for the various reasons, but we cannot give up on the goodness that we all carry within. I am currently planning my next fly fishing trip to Norway. And plan to travel to Kenya, Namibia and other parts of Africa soon.

As an American I’m trying really hard not to let the Internet trolls who have posted to this board lower my opinion of Europeans. Some of you seem like inbred trailer-trash, rednecks from the US.
Immigration in general leads to some initial resistance/tension and then assimilation. Too bad some governments don’t take this into consideration. I’m clearly not against immigration, but it should be handled more thoughtfully and gradually. Immigrants of any color should be welcomed to any land as long as they seek education and honest work opportunities. They should also learn the local language as quickly as possible and through whatever means are necessary.
Of course, some people will always be stupid, hateful bastards. Racism will never completely go away, but it can and should decrease!

Compared to the rest of the world, USA and Britan included Norway is a non racist paradise where all skin colours and cultures are welcome. Uhmm,i am somali and norwegian. I have never experienced racism by norwegians becasue of my brown skin or racial background. i have lived in Oslo&Bergen my whole life. Reading some of these comments is enough to make someone sad about the future of the world. Norway has a positive side which isnt reflected in some responses about foreigners. However, I have visited other European countries and sometimes what is called ‘special treatment’ in Norway is considered normal in for example, Holland. I hope one day all people in the world will be able to face each other on the basis of respect and equal
standing.

One final criticism would be that it is only in Norway that I’ve seen a newspaper article proclaiming that blacks have lower IQ than whites being printed on the full length of a front page. There is only one race i.e. the human race. There are asians, africans and europeans with similar IQ levels. I really am not suprised when I read some ignorant peoples comments on the subject. I myself live in norway and I am a United States citizen. I am also of ethnic decent and find it tolerable here. You do see that sometimes people do want to look and stare at your inter-racial relationship, they want to see what youre baby looks like. curiosity I suppose. I have learned that Norway is going through something quite unique I would say. Its a cultural revolution really. They are starting to see more ethnic people then they ever have in their lifetimes. Living here during this change is both exciting and exhausting. My mother grew up in a time during segregation and my grandparents during the Great Depression. America has come a long way in their civil rights and equality of people. Norway is still learning how to integrate immigrants into society. And like any media today the only headlines that make the news front is the Somalian man who brutally raped a norwegian woman. It is a skewed view of what is the truth, since only 1 out of 10 rapes are actually reported. Leaving a disproportionate representation to society thinking the only rapes that are happening are the ones Somalian men are commiting. I believe that Norway should be very tedious on who they let into their countries especially from places that are unfortunately wartorn and known for violence. Men are violent in some cultures than others. Men are also viewed as being higher than others and oppress women. In the world today I would hardly make this about color, but about sex. These things Norway must look at when they are allowing people to enter. If you commit a crime in this country (norway) you should be sent back to your country and not imprisoned. For it is taxpayers dollars being spent pointlessly to rehabilitate a person that is not their responsibility. They also should not be granted amnesty or claim asylum either. I think that you have to take care of whats is yours and be careful in who you trust. America has to be guarded about who they let into our country because there are a lot of enemies out there. It is important that you stabilize the immigrants that are here legally and are working hard and contributing to society, by integrating them into society well. I think Norway is soon to see more crime unfortunately and more of a wake up call. Many people here still leave their doors open at night, still answer their door in the middle of the night, still leave their child outside their house unattended while the are inside. . . these things are unheard of to me. I come from a country where people will steal you blind or worse hurt you if you do something so foolish. Norway has been what seems to be a bubble for a long time and now at least in the past two decades began to change. I asked my husband the other day if hed watched “reading rainbow” a publically broadcasted show in the states with a very talented and famous african american actor. My husband said “there were no black people on tv that I ever saw growing up” it was astonishing to me the fact hed only seen one black person in his life till he joined the armed forces. It goes to show you how cut off from immigration norwegians really are. So in my opinion yes, the older generations who definitely live in the more rural areas arent racially tolerant to diversity and multiculturalism. But I am here today with a testimonial and a clear mind that this is bound to happen, but once the older generations die off and maybe the last one after that Norway will be an entirely different more integrated racially forward country. ) Hopefully I will help pave the way to people getting used to our diversity.

A black man, maybe:-) The American have done it. A black man cannot be respected in Norway. No matter what is said here, its just a game. There are 166 members in the parliment in Norway but none is black. There are 90% unemployed kvalified blacks in the streets of Norway, will they ever be employed in respectable position? No i don’t think so. The fact is <> Not even can the rent a decent house from Norwegians.. This is the fact:-). Many Norwegians are double morals, they pretent, but down deep, they are rasist:-)

Persons with foreign names have trouble getting work in Norway. Sometimes the difference between the treatment in the labor market is so visible but without consequences. It is not the same for all, lest opportunities for non western, and the treatment not the same. Some citizens may not participate in Norwegian society, they need to live on social benefits, yet are stigmatized. Consequence is that, black men families are defragmented. This causes a negative trend in relation to their children and their family structures:-)

Well, I am due to visit Norway for the first time. For those of you who have issue with people of colour, I am a beautiful black person, British born of Jamaican parentage. Unlike some of the previous contributors to this forum I have no fears whatsoever in going to Norway and look forward to my first impressions as well as the positive experiences I hope to gain.
I would like to point out to those of you who have deep issues regarding skin colour i.e. race, that it would be useful if you took sometime to open your minds. Actually, what I mean is to educate your minds appropriately with knowledge and understanding that is of benefit, instead of wasting unnecessary energies. (I’m sure you know what I mean). Finally, I make no apologies for this, but in case you need some guidance on where to start, did you know that we are all AFRICANS.

Well I’m an Asian (Indian) software engineer in Norway and I’m yet to face any true racism from anyone up here. The people are a bit cold to strangers, which I understand, is a kind of cultural difference but race is not a factor there. They are indifferent to ALL strangers, regardless of race.
BUT, I’ve hardly ever known such loyal and caring friends as I have made here. My wife (who works as a finance consultant) tells me the same thing too.

All that said, however, I realize that our own situation does not apply to all immigrants because of the following factors:

1. Both me and my wife spoke fluent Norsk by the time we got here

2. Having worked in a Norwegian firm (Opera Software), I’m used to Norwegian work ethic and culture

3. We’re both highly educated and work in senior positions.

4. Asians in general, face slightly lesser racism than people of African Descent.

Still, racism is something that is just not palpable in Norway when compared to countries like the Netherlands.

I’m not surprised at the article, however. Oppdal is pretty much a rural “backwater”.

Back in India too, people from remote, rural places would probably be apt to behave the same way to someone they see as “foreign” while city people, who are more used to a multicultural populace are a lot more welcoming to foreigners. It’s true for any country.

Racism and extremist views always seem to be amplified on internet boards. I highly doubt that many of the racist “Norwegians” here (if they really are Norwegians) actually show their racism in real life. My guess is that they never do because Norwegian society as a whole disapproves of such behaviour.
As you can see in the article, the incident was quite shocking to the ethnic Norwegians involved too. I’m not so surprised, for reasons aforementioned. The point is, that racism is NOT rampant in Norway and it does not have societal acceptance either, outside of extremist fringe groups.

So yes, if you can integrate well with the culture and can contribute meaningfully, you are welcome. That is the message which is sent out and that is the message that me and my wife have recieved.

I am a black woman (although have white and Asian (Indian) blood in my veins. I was born in England of Barbadian parents and raised in Canada AND work for the Federal Government.

I think no matter how you slice it, in order for the ruling majority of society to accept people outside their “norm” will take some time.

Not all Norwegians should be painted with the same racist brush and not all people of colour, be that Black, Indian, Jews, Chinese, etc. should be painted with whatever negative connotations you wish to add to them.

We are ALL different. White, Swedes to a white Brits, white Canadians to white Americans; we will ALL have different values and ethics. It’s how you use yourself to expand your knowledge of the INDIVIDUAL you are dealing with. Use Yugoslavia now Croatia and Serbia as history of how to sets of the same race in a EUROPEAN country – didn’t get a long.

If I wasted my brain power thinking how I can put down my fellow human being for my own ignorance, I would be nothing. It’s a pity for those of you that want to stay in your own little bubble and speak out both sides of your mouth.

My boyfriend is of Somolian heritage. It was not accepted well by my Bajan parents because first, he is African and second, he is of Somolian decent (raised in Kenya).

There is no more racism in Norway than other comparable countries. Generally Norwegians are a peace loving happy bunch but the last 10-15 years has seen a significant change. We welcome tourists and if you wish to visit us I can promise that you’ll have a wonderful time and find most Norwegians as a very warm and welcoming people. Now to the problem:

Norway is filthy rich and lots of money go into a broad range of welfare services. Loose your job? No problem, go to your local NAV office and get free money! Get sick? No problem, all health-care is free. Get a baby? Stay home, Norway will pay your salary! Have an accident? Don’t worry about getting back to work in a hurry, Norway pays your salary while you recuperate. Are you disabled or handicapped or get a kid with those disabilities? No worries, Norway will get you a new house that’s adapted to the special needs you or your family might have, or pay for any changes that needs to be made to your house / apartment! And so on and so forth.

Sounds awesome? It is. And it has generally worked really great because the Norwegians have a good work ethic, we know that if something happens to us, Norway will have our back but for it to work we all have to contribute when we can. Slacking off and faking illness (why bother working when you get paid either way?) is frowned upon and 99,5% of Norwegians work hard and contribute as much as they can to this happy little society. It’s worked fine since WW2.

The what about immigration? Are Norwegians a racist unfriendly bunch? What if a smart Asian guy or a German engineer wishes to settle down in Norway? If they’re upstanding citizens that wish to contribute and there is not a single Norwegian that wouldn’t welcome him/her with open arms. Still, no problems, but then:

Imagine that people abroad hear about this country far north that hands out free money. You don’t have to do shit, you can just put your ass on a plane or a bus, say “Hi, I’m here!” and Norway will get you an apartment, lots of offers of free education and send you free money every 14 days. Even in jail you get free money (for being in jail!!) and the standard is higher than the finest hotels in non development countries (no joke! Internet access, flat-screen TV, private toilet, fine art on the walls, and so on…).

So when poor uneducated jackasses around the world (though mostly Africa and the middle east) hear about this wonderful place with free money, what do you think they do? Yeah, they flow in here like a swarm of piranhas. Ignorant politicians (and for the first 5-10 years, the Norwegian population too) pity everyone, welcome them in and sow pillows under their arms.

Our new “enrichments” to the Norwegian society doesn’t want to contribute (and why should they, free money!!), doesn’t want to learn Norwegian, meet Norwegians or even see them. If Norway wants to give them a FREE apartment elsewhere than in the capitol Oslo (where all their friends live) they scream, bitch and whine and yell racism till they get their way. If all the FREE money isn’t enough, how about just stealing something? Norwegians are NOT tough on crime (The Police doesn’t even carry guns) and besides, it’s not your fault if you do something wrong as Norwegian politicians just pities you and your tough upbringing. “It cant be your fault, you just had a bad childhood.” Then multiply this by 10, by 100, by 1.000, by 10.000. There are now several elementary schools in the capitol Oslo where there are NO Norwegian pupils! Not a SINGLE Norwegian, in NORWAY?!
Many Muslims have a twisted view of their own religion and regard Norwegian women as trash that can be used or abused as they please. EVERY SINGLE assaulted rape in Norway the last three years was committed by a man of “non-western origin”. The Norwegian men aren’t worth much either, they can be victims of blind violence if that sounds like fun and generally be talked down on as they are an ignorant bunch that hands out free money. Also, they’re not Muslim and as such is considered a lower species. Not cockroaches, but close.

Now this shit is spiraling out of control, and fast. Our good neighbor Denmark has set a firm position against immigration from non-western people and gotten really tough. Sweden is seeing an uprise in riots and related crimes and have just (two days ago) reinstated a government that is more strict on immigration. Norway will do the same. The current elected government has gone from scandal to scandal and is mostly considered as the biggest failure in modern Norwegian history (even though some “rød-grønne” fans will claim otherwise). The next general election is in 2013 and expect to see a dramatic change in Norways direction as Fremskrittspartiet get a large percentage of the votes. There may be hope for Norway yet, but drastic measures need to be taken. ASAP!

Anyhow! I do admit I frown upon immigrants who do nothing to fit in (language, culture and ethic-wise), no matter if they are from an African country, the Middle East, Thailand, Mexico, Germany, India, Italy, Britain, etc. Honestly, I don’t care WHERE you are from, as long as you try to adapt. Just like tourists research facts about a country, such as what is appropriate to wear when visiting a religious country and so forth, all immigrants should make an effort to get to know the language (sign up on a language course today! Or even better – do it before moving!), the culture (NO, not all whites share the same cultural norms. Scandinavians are usually more reserved than the British, for instance), the law, the politics, some history, blah blah blah. Of course, I cannot say for sure whether all people do, or don’t do, these things before moving. That is not the issue, however. The issue is that it does not seem like they have made ANY effort to fit in and adapt to their new home. Surely, it’s quite natural for immigrants to seek other immigrants in terms of feeling more safe, patriotic, share experiences, speak their own language and so forth, but several immigrant groups are forming “ghettos” in Norway. These ghettos are consisting of immigrants from various countries grouping together, isolating themselves from the big community. What does this do but continue creating scepticism among Norwegians? How can someone scream “RACISM!!!!!!” when they do nothing to contribute, isolate themselves and ignores the cultural and juridical laws of the country they or their parents moved to?

I do want to stress the fact that multiculturalism is not always frowned upon in the smaller cities. Some people seem to believe that people from more rural communities get poorer education and are generally more racist – I wish to point out that the education is not any less superior in any way. The second thing, the racism: On a general, superficial basis, people from the countryside see less immigrants as the countryside appears not to be as attractive to many foreign groups. For some, the cultural shock is rather intense. Their impression of foreigners are derived from popular culture and the information they choose to seek out themselves via the internet, travels and the media. People from the countryside are not any less intelligent than people from the city, they simply have a different starting point than people who grow up in a more ethnically varied community. Just like in the city, some people could not care less what the newspaper says, nor to gather information on the net, or travel to far away countries to indulge in something beyond senseless binge drinking and wild parties. However, with less foreign kids in rural schools and less immigrants in the work places, these non-information-seeking-people have little, if anything, to base their impressions on. As we meet people, we only present fragments of our personalities, the parts we wish to show is this and that situation. Still, when meeting new people, we base our entire first impression on these fragments, and try our best to puzzle the fragments and our own imagined information (for instance pre-judice from popular culture such as all blondes being dumb) together to assemble what we percieve as the whole picture. Is it then really that strange some people are not as comfortable around immigrants who, for instance, does not participate in the community, does not want to speak the language and “forces” religious views upon us through speech or attitudes? Does this not only give the less informed person more incorrect information? Does this not “confirm” his or her invalid information about some groups being secretive, plotting together to take over the country and commit crimes, and so forth?

I personally believe cultural exploration is a good thing as long as you commit to the laws and norms of the country you are visiting or moving to. I am, however, in conflict with myself on some issues. Whereas I wish to keep the old Norwegian traditions true to their roots and as well-kept as we can as of now, I also admire new cultural tendecies and influences. I apprechiate all languages, yet I wish the Norwegian language to stay as pure as possible. Skin colour, however, I do not care about. Religion wise, I am not religious at all, and I hope the country will stay just as non-religious it is today (statistically Norway is very secularized whereas the official papers say otherwise).

About the case of the priest in Oppdal: It’s horrible, of course. The abuse he has faced, of course. That the family wish to choose a different priest for their funeral is THEIR choice, and nothing which is up for debate in my opinion. If a family wants this or that priest because they feel he or she represents their values, is a good preacher or whatever, is, as said before, THEIR buisness. Pulling out the RACISM!!!!-card is a lousy thing. The funeral is not about the PRIEST, it is about the family and their dearly beloved who have passed away. THEY make the call.

To add something to my previous post, I wish to say that everyone can do their best to try to include the immigrants in official insitutions such as schools and work places. Make them feel like home in their new country. Making a move to a completely different country and culture is tough. However, the foreginer has to make a huge effort too. Act friendly, and people will act friendly towards you. Participate, engage, adapt – and we will wish to learn from you, and take you into the warmth of the Norwegian community. It might be cold up here temperature wise, but we are indeed friendly and loyal people beneath our harsh exterior.

And, believe me, most Norwegians get very excited about learning new inhabitants about our culture, our language, our norms and so forth. Breaking the ice could be as easy as learning a few Norwegian phrases and starting a conversation with them. I bet most people will say “Oh, you speak Norwegian so well! How long have you been here? Where are you from?…” and so forth. We are indeed, as mentioned earlier, shy and reserved, and we hesitate making new relations all by ourselves. However, when we realise you are here to stay (and not just grab a whole bunch of money and move back to xxx and live like kings – a common prejudice in most wealthy countries), we will be very happy to get to know you, your culture and everything you have to offer.

Norway is a beautiful country , with beautiful people. When I was working in Norway I did not face any prejudices of any kind. In fact once I (the foreigner) took an interest in learning the language and local accent my Norwegian team mates also took an interest in learning my culture. They were the coolest bunch of people I have ever met.My observation is that although Norwegians might seem ‘cold’ to some people, they are really very friendly and caring. Just respect their privacy and respect the culture. Don’t try to impose your culture on theirs’. Being away from my family for two years working in Norway, it helps to be a part of the community instead of isolating one’s self because of insecure feelings and fear. To those who have made Norway their new home, embrace Her as She has received you.Be grateful and show it in a positive manner. Peace .

I love to travel and meet people from all over the world and learn about all cultures. A year ago, I traveled to Minnesota. I found that the people there were extremely friendly which I found intriguing. I returned to Minnesota for a second time and discovered a beautiful mural displaying Norwegian tradition and culture. I never saw racist behavior. Very warm, reserved, but very friendly and open. I met an online friend from Norway who was so happy to share about her culture and way of life. I’ve also received an invitation to visit there. I’ve learned some basic norwegian expressions and numbers: Hva heter du? What’s your name? Hvor er du fra? Where are you from? Hvordan gar det? How are you doing?

What inspired me to go to Norway? Well, my favorite group A-ha. I love their music as well as their humanitarian work which impressed me the most. They have inspired me to empower others. I went to their concert in New York because they will be retiring this December 2010 in Oslo. They have been international artists for 25 years. I am very proud to be apart of their history. I had the opportunity to have my picture taken with Mags the keyboard player and a signed autograph twice because the first signature was on plastic. This man was smiling with the utmost joy and was more than happy to take the photo. I also had the opportunity to be in the front row. I will never forget the end of the concert when Morten Hartket heard me in the audience and gave me the signature wave as if he was honored by my presence. I will cherish this moment for a lifetime.

There are racists in every corner of the earth but that should not deter you to going anywhere on this earth. Racism should not be condoned nor shall we add to the fuel with disputing over racism or class. The root of racism: bad experiences, the fear of being conquered or participating in a group that promotes hate.

I am looking forward to going to Norway. I know I will have an enriching, enlightening and positive experience.

PEACE TO EVERYONE

Well, its been awhile since my last chat and boy aren’t we still kickin ass. This topic is beautiful to me because I have travelled quite extensively and honestly believe that for any foreigner to insist that they migrate to another country and then try and introduce their culture stock-gun and barrel, must be freakin dreaming. I am a Ugandan or as for some Norwegians, an African. But that does not blind me to the failure of multi-culturalism in western countries. I will be up front and say, I live overseas and have had to adjust within reason i.e. not trying to become white as Michael Jackson, but adopt a lifestyle that does not obligue me to carry religion around me because I believe religion or GOD is a personal issue and not a public issue. So many moons ago, I had to work and study to obtain a qualification that gave me a job that pays me to live a comfortable life and also, unlike what most migrants do when they first arrive in a foreign country, I purposely avoided community settlements and elders to the exclusion of my studies, lecturers and an unwvering drive to succeed and look beyond welfare.
So not trying to shine a torch at up my behind, I would like to say, for those folks in Norway fed up of good for nothing African migrants, please keep at it because it is your country and you have a right to be pissed-off, but try not to paint all Africans with the same brush. Believe you me, just like not evry Norwegian is a rocket scientist, so applies to Africans. That is, not each one of us is a drug dealer, woman grabber, dead beat dad, dole blugger, good for nothing human on this planet. There is a large proportion of the continent that lives be it a third world standard of living without the need for more technology. Unfortunately these people are not what you see in your country or on TV. The sad part about the people you are pissed off about is that they have come to your country under the guise of being refugees. Well to be honest, I can’t to this day see the actual point of this western driven policy. This is because year on year you take the least educated, ex-military, ill informed people to your country wholesale. The only check you have is the UNCHR which exists because of refugees. So don’t be suprised when all you get are some of the bad apples fro even the African continent. My take on this issue is for Norwegians to decide which of the refugees comes to their country, why and how they reckon they will fit in, for a culture that is no muslim. That way you will get at least people who will be greatfull and leave the rest on the motherland to sort their sh*t out.

Well my answer is simple, years ago before these characters started making us look bad, travelling around the world especially Europe was a breeze. These days, you need to watch where you are going, which is damn right sad. Also, as a Ugandan, when I was growing up, I recall and to this day, how racist we could be to foreigners, especially the Indian people. These people were imported into Uganda in the 1800s and had generations born in Uganda, but we still felt they were not Ugandan because they failed to inter marry, speak our language or even try and imported alot of their culture which they promoted widely given they were affluent at the expense of the indegenous folks. So when Idi Amin deported the Indian, the local folks were jubilant. To this day, Indians have returned but they are not openly accepted. However for those who try to fit in and speak the language or marry into the indigeneous folks, life is a breeze. So not to carryon for ever like a a kookobara in the morning, I would like to say, to those aggrevated Norwegians, I feel for you, but please abstain from painting all africans with one brush because we are individuals and as such some of us will never sh*t where we sleep (if u know what I mean). I have lived in Norway since 1993. I originate from a Balkans country, more precisely former Yugoslavia. There are a few things I’ve noticed about so-called “ethnical Norwegians”; first of all, they are generally friendly to foreigners or foreign-originated countrymen. But they seldom bond properly with them, or us. They like to be on friendly leg with everyone, thats what they are like, but they don’t really wanna be FRIENDS with you if you are not like them.
Second, most of them think that all or nearly all crimes are committed by immigrants and that Norwegians generally aren’t involved in such activities, save for a select few outcasts. It’s interesting to note then that one of the biggest heists in Norway’s history, the NOKAS heist, was planned and executed by almost 100% ethnic Norwegian crew.

If you watch tv here, you’ll find that Norwegian commercials feature almost only ethnical Norwegians, despite the fact that the non-ethnical population now makes up about 10% of Norway’s population. In a country like UK it would be inconceivable and would create a public outcry if there were so few commercials featuring people of immigrant origin. The only one I know of right now presents a Paki/Indian store owner who’s trying to hide away a bag of chips from a customer, a Norwegian woman. It doesn’t really paint a flattering portrait of an average immigrant.

Letting Blacks into their country is one of the worst things any European nation can do. The negatives of a Black population will always outweigh the positives. Africans simply have NOTHING to offer a civilized society but trouble. Norway is cutting it’s own throat by letting scum in.

I am a black American and I got soooo tired of holier than thou white Europeans telling us how we “should” have a black president, when none of these countries would ever have a black leader in a million years! I’ve been to Europe and while no one was outright rude to me, I could sense the hostility in France towards North Africans and in Italy, the dislike towards Roma and black Africans. There is still racism in the U.S., of course, but at least we don’t stick our heads in head about it. Despite our problems, I would much rather live here than in any European country, especially cold, boring, Scandinavia, which apparently isn’t as liberal as its cracked up to be.

not all Africans are scum and surely we can offer something apart from culture. The problem as I said in one of my comments above is that you are importing the wrong people into your communities. Honestly if you analyse the majority of people who migrate to live in Scandinavian countries and not visiting, you will realise that these are refugees.
Why are these people refiugees? On the most part they are from a war zone where they were either soldiers or victims. Therefore none of those folks you import into your countries any intellectual ability to offer other than the sorry ass stories about being butchered, losing family, being raped and so on and so forth and hardly any mentions what they did to survive. On the flip side once they are let into the country, they start demanding this right and that right and may eeven resort to some of their war antics. So in a nutshell, if what you have is an uneducated, ex-war zone fighter or victim, in some cases a religious fanatic, what do you really expect to get? My suggestion is that cast your eye wider as a citizen of the earth and you will find that majority of Africans still live in Africa and are happy to do so without overseas aid or the need to leave their mother land. On the other hand, there are several educated Africans overseas on merit as there are whites in Africa, who scarcely get mentioned here because majority of what you’ve got are refugees. Therefore rather than paint every African with the same brush, I would suggest you work on convincing your government and refugee lobby that European countries stop importing refugees and let Africans look after our own. Yes it will result in loss of life, but gradually we will resolve our differences. I leave you with an example, at present in Somalia, African peace keeping forces are battling to stabilise a country led by a bunch of religious fanatics. Yes it is not the best example but with time we will sort out our own stuff. So with that, get working on stopping the exodus of so called refugees to your countries.

Ohh sorry. A very interesting discussion. After what i can see here in Norway, i dont find racism(but i am ethnic). My school is mabye 20% immigrants or of immigrant parents. Well at least it seems like really many have it good even if their from different backgrounds. There is no “ghetto” like it is black there and white there.

My group of friends is 2/6 not ethnic, and we are just chilling having a good time. The school is about 1000 students (high school) and we just had a big world cultural arrangement, most of them who had different cultural backgrounds at the school participate in a “Model/drag..yeah show” and showed us their cultural wearings. A very good atmosphere! everything from Norway, Indonesia, Pakistan, Somalia and Japanese and much more:P Everybody cheers and enjoyed it.

Never seen any form for racism. Not a problem at all, not dangerous at all. No rascism at least not for the up-growing youths. And just mention my Somali friend is the smartest of us.

Most Nigerian people who were born in Nigeria have houses in Nigeria that they eventually go back and live in. So what’s the problem? If I’m a doctor can you imagine what my children will be?

I personally think avaerage norwegians have no problems with asians (the light skin asians from japan, s.korea, china ect). I know my family really liked the boy. Besides i’m very much into asian culture – anime, video games, jpop, kpop, visual kei bands ect ect. So i don’t think you would have no problem living in norway. Wow…WOW. All these comments, infused with so much emotion, make me honestly think that perhaps in a few decades’ time many countries will be on the brink of race wars, some of them with religious overtones (Islam).
After reading the majority of these comments, I can say I never want to visit Norway. That’s not just because it’s a hot-bed for not-so-ignorant Neo-Nazis, but also I wouldn’t want to deal with wigged-out Muslim men beating me up ’cause I don’t want to wear a sheet over my head. Wow, this is all a bit disheartening to read…all blacks aren’t the same any more than all whites are the same but people have a right to decide who is in their company and who presides over the final rites of the family members.

Wasting breath arguing with people who hate you for nothing more than the color of your skin is also a waste of time. People can think what they want to think and you shouldn’t validate their opinions by lowering yourself to obscene language and empty threats. I think a bigger problem than race, however, if religion and a lack of education. I’m a black American and I studied abroad in Denmark while in university. I didn’t have any problems while I was there nor did I have any problems when I visited Norway and Sweden. I could be naive but I think that is due in large part to the fact that I was respectful of the people I encountered, at least attempted to speak the languages in limited interactions (though extremely badly).

I was told not to visit Germany because I would face racism, but I recently visited and I loved it! Made a ton of friends (that’s white German friends who were supposed to hate me btw) and even met my now boyfriend there. Same story for Italy, people told me “Oh Italians are racist” BS! I loved Italy, no one treated me bad once. I’m sure the same goes for Norway. I’m planning on visiting Norway sometime next year and am looking forward to it. Whoa! I’ve lived in Norway for around six years, I’m a ~Mexican American~ from Los Angeles and I’ve never experienced racism, in Norway. Though it could be since I’m paler than my Norwegian boyfriend. ha!

Honestly, I think Norway is a great country and I have spent years learning the language (Jeg har fortsatt problemer med å forstå dialekter! Spesielt folk fra Bergen og Stavanger.). I think that’s the problem, even though the government supplies foreigners, free Norwegian classes, hardly anyone takes them! I honestly believe, yeah it’s hard to make DEEP/real friendships with Norwegians unless you speak the language and how are you going to do that if don’t assimilate into the culture?

I am from the caribbean and I am just baffled by these discussions about skin colour. Please people, why does the colour of one’s skin matter. It’s just some extra melanin!!! What should matter everyone is the content of the mind not the colour of the skin nor the shape of the lips or nose. That’s just physical attributes. It has NOTHING to do with intelligence or with thought patterns. I am black . I graduated from an American institution with honours in mathematics. I graduated with my masters from a british university with honours. My brown skin did not affect my brain power one bit. Skin colour never interferes with brain power.

I live in Norway at the momet,and I’m not Norwegian.It’s been couple of monthes that since I came here.I didn’t have so much information about norway.I just heared that Norway is a beautiful,cold,green country with soft people.

Hmm…. Why don’t all black people who aren’t comfortable being out of Africa just return to the motherland. While walking the streets of Nairobi, I would hardly tell an African American unless I heard them speak (accent). Everybody just goes about their business. When we see a white person, he could be an expatriate going about his business, a white settler (most of whom can speak local languages – white Africans generally) or a tourist and hey… everybody’s happy. Of course we do have cases of crime once in a while, but we have this saying in Kenya that “every market has its madman” – so does every other place on earth have its own share of violence and crime.

I am from the Caribbean, and here when the white women come there are a select group of black men who compete for them on the beach and nightclubs. Sometimes you see the prettiest white woman with the roughest looking black guy and i don’t understand it sometimes. I have all kind of reasons as to why.
