Conservative Republicans(are there any other views these days?) are bringing in the Marine Corps in order to prevent the lifting of restrictions on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. Admiral Mike Mullen, chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates have both urged the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell” so Republicans have to find support for their refusal to acknowledge the bravery of American men and women who happen to be gay or lesbian. Retired Marine Corps General John Sheehan will appear at the request of Republican leaders and he will undoubtedly support the anti-repeal views of Marine Corps Commander Gen. James Conway.
Several service men and women who were “outed” from the military because of their sexual views will also testify. There is no doubt each “side”can find people to support their views, but in the end, it comes down to a simple issue –should those currently risking their lives for the United States of America be denied their humanity because of bigotry and hatred?
