Ah, the politically appropriate folk are on the warpath over use by the American armed forces of the code word, “Geronimo” to identity the killing on Osama bin Laden. Jefferson Keel, president of the National Congress of American Indians, fired off a missive to the man in the White House, whose own name is still a subject of dispute. “To associate a native warrior with bin Laden is not an accurate reflection of history, and it undermines the military service of native people.” According to Keel logic, is an affront to Native Americans because it linked the terrorist activities with American Indians. Huh! The SEALS who killed Osama bin Laden flashed back, “Geronimo-EKIA” to make certain President Obama knew the al-Qaeda leader was dead. How do we go from that to claiming use of “Geronimo” somehow indicates Native Americans were supporters of Osama bin Laden??
Of course, for over fifty years American paratroopers when leaping from the plane shout in happiness, “Geronimo.” OK, if this word bothers “Native Americans” or “Indians” or whatever, how about shouting, MOISHE!
By the way, Mr. Keel should be reprimanded for using the expression, “Native American” since the word “American” comes from Amerigo Vespucci, who worked for the Medici family. Can I now claim using the expression, “Native American” somehow links those people with the Mafia?
Give it a rest.
