Seven years ago, President George Bush told America we were invading Afghanistan in order to destroy the Taliban which had played an important role in the 9/11 bombings. Yesterday, the British, Sunday Telegraph, reported there have been secret meetings in Saudi Arabia between representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban. Karzai’s brother, Qayoun, supposedly is the head negotiator in the discussions. The United Kingdom has been urging Karzai to explore a possible coalition government with the Taliban in order to prevent Afghanistan from continuing its descent into chaos. Under the Saudi initiative, about a dozen senior Taliban leaders came to Saudi Arabia to participate in discussions.
Reality is the Afghan government has lost control over its own territory. The Bush decision in 2001 and 2002 to refocus from Afghanistan to Iraq has been among the most disastrous in recent diplomatic history. It enabled the Taliban to regroup and ended the possibility of wiping them out as an organized group.
