I recall vividly in March, 2003 when George Bush announced US forces would be invading Iraq in order to destroy Saddam’s WMD program. Liberals urged the president to wait until UN inspectors concluded their investigation which had yet to find any evidence of any WMD, only to be described by the Republican party as traitors who wanted to display weakness that would encourage terrorism. Fast forward to 2011, when the same Republican party is proposing reductions in Defense Department spending as well as programs that benefit veterans. Congressman Paul Ryan wants to cut money being spent on programs that enable veterans cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or those which assist returning soldiers to gain jobs. This blog has no problem with reductions in expenditures for the Defense Department since there really is no need for more fighter planes or aircraft carriers in an age which lacks a military opponent to the US.
Republicans waved the flag and accused those who wanted to avoid war of being traitors. A Republican president and a Republicans controlled Congress sent young men and women off to die or be wounded. Now, after thousands have risked their lives the same Republican party wants to lower the flag and cut money for those who need it. Who are the “traitors” now?
