The Russian government — that means Prime Minister Vladmir Putin — warned European nations and the USA if they continued to support dissident forces in Syria it ran the risk that it might lead to “a very big war that will cause suffering not only to countries in the region but also to states far beyond its boundaries.” Foreign Minister Segei Lavrov, made clear his nation would veto any UN Security proposal to use force in order to end the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Lavrov admitted that there have been calls “for sending Arab troops to Syria” which means Russia would be unable “to prevent this.” If Arab nations want to overthrow Assad, the responsibility rests with themselves and Russia will stand apart from doing anything, but it will prevent UN Security Council action.
