The American media has made Ronald Reagan into the hero who “ended the Cold War”when in reality it was ended by Mikhail Gorbachev. In the 1980s, Gorbachev had the option of retaining communism as a political system and embracing a form of market economy as did China. Instead, he opted to end his own power in order to aid the Russian people secure a democratic society. Former President Mikhail Gorbachev lived to witness the emergence of a petty thug named Vladimir Putin grab power and stifle those who dare oppose his rule.
According to Gorbachev, new Putin laws which define what constitutes treason or illegel protests or speech, constitute “an attack on the rights of citizens.” He characterized Putinism as including “thieves and corrupt officials.” He urged Putin to engage in open dialogue with the Russian people. “For goodness sake, you shouldn’t be afraid of your own people.”
He noted that Putin and his gang charge him with “giving away eastern Europe.” “But, who did I give it to? I gave Poland, for example, back to Poles. Who else does it belong to?”
