In America, we devote enormous time, energy, and money focusing on how to raise reading scores or entrance exam scores which results in millions of students and teachers wasting their time on how to raise test results. Singapore has gone a rather different path — they brought together a group of international education experts and posed the question: how does one create a world class teacher cadre?
America is wasting its time worrying about test results while other nations are interested in improving the quality of education. Last week England announced a dramatic shift away from state mandated tests to empowering teachers to make use of their creative minds by using educational materials that would intellectually engage students. All we Americans worry about is reading test results. Of course, we have no interest in whether higher reading scores translate into children reading more books or being intellectually stimulated by their reading.
