Southeast Asian Nations Hold Off on Human Rights

An attempt at the recent meeting of southeast Asian nations to issue a statement on human rights was shot down mainly due to opposition from the brutal military dictatorship of Myanmar. The generals who rule the country refused to allow even a mention of human rights in any statement. They were quietly supported by diplomats from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

At least the topic got a hearing at the meeting of Southeast Asian Nations. Hopefully, in the coming year it will get further along than a hearing.
