The people of Syria have been abandoned, not only by the Western world, but by their own fellow Muslims. UN envoy, Kofi Annan, resigned due to hopelessness of the situation. “When the Syrian people need action, there continues to be finger-pointing and name calling in the Security Council.” Russia and China refuse to authorize any action against their ally, President Bashar al-Assad.
A rebellion which arose cutting across religious lines to include both Muslims and Christians is now shifting to a fanatic Muslim cause in which al-Qaeda and other extreme Muslim groups will dominate the fighting. In the end, they will influence direction of a post Assad government. If this occurs, Christians will flee Syria since all are aware of how Iraq Muslims mistreat Christians in their country.
Where were moderate–or even conservative– Muslim leaders? Why didn’t they assert greater determination to support the people of Syria? In the end, extremists will triumph and Syria is doomed to despair and war.
