Thousands of tanks and troops are gathering around the town of Aleppo. Critics claim this will be a decisive battle in the Syrian civil war. It will not. Assad forces, most probably, will drive rebels from the city. Rebels will flee. For the moment, Assad will feel powerful, but rebels will disappear into rural areas, regain their military strength and within months once again will seek gaining control of Aleppo.
Syria is now experiencing a classic guerrilla battle. Eventually, thousands of Syrian troops will desert, generals will flee for their lives, and the Christian business exodus will accelerate. Even his staunchest ally, Russia, warned Assad about how to proceed with this civil war. Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bagdanov, warned the president about the “inadmissibility of any threats of the use of chemical weapons.”
It is simply a matter of time.
