The New York State legislature is prepared to pass a plan which will establish procedures to evaluate teachers. An assumption of this plan is that members of a state legislature (a) should identify standards to evaluate teachers, (b) know how to establish procedures on how to evaluate teachers. I doubt if any of these men and woman actually have taught children, but, what the heck, they know all about teaching and learning.
As of this date, I do not know of any state legislature which is preparing standards to evaluate policemen, firemen, garbage collectors, park employees or those who work in government offices. Heck, we have a Secretary of Education who has NEVER taught children. Of course, if a president selected a person lacking legal experience to be his Attorney General, the nation would be furious.
The bottom line is that politicians lack respect for the teaching profession and believe Anyone understands how to teach.
