Terror In Indonesia

The struggle to establish the rule of law is an ongoing task and all too often in nations throughout the world, its army which supposedly protects the nation, is all too often the institution that protects itself rather than citizens. On March 23, nine Indonesian soldiers, members of the special unit, Kopassus, stormed a prison, dragged four prisoners from their cells and shot them dead. Supposedly the soldiers killed these men on the assumption they had participated in the murder of a man from their unit Fortunately, an important Indonesian general, Brigadier-General Untung Yudhoyono, made clear the men would stand trial for murder.

The special unit, Kopassuss, is notorious for its violation of human rights. It is a good sign that the Indonesian military is beginning to halt such abuse of human rights and make clear to  its own soldiers they can not take the law into their o wn hands.
