As the world is shocked and dismayed by events in Norway where a lone gunman went on a rampage and killed over 70 people, less notice is being focused on the United States House of Representatives which is now under siege by a band of pseudo-patriots who go by the name of the Tea Party. They demand a balanced budget amendment to the US Constitution in order to approve any increase in the debt ceiling. Of course, they are supported by such leading economic theorists as Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann who claim not paying our debts is really not much danger to our nation’s image in the world.

Wall Street financier, Steve Rattner, compared their behavior in this manner: “It’s like a form of economic terrorism. These Tea Party guys are like strapped with dynamite standing in the middle of Times Square at rush hour, and saying either you do it my way or we are going to blow you up, ourselves up, and the whole country with us.”

The real tragedy is that Americans voted for these nut cases who ran for election claiming the way to reduce unemployment was to fire hundreds of thousands of government employees!
