Fighting is now raging in the streets of Damascus and reports indicate rebel forces are within eyesight of the presidential palace. Alawite supporters of President Assad are most probably fighting for their lives and future, but a high percent of members of the military are Sunni. They are fighting friends and relatives. At some point during the coming weeks, it is the non-Alawite and non-Christian soldiers who will re-examine the situation and realize the situation is hopeless. When that moment is reached, it is the end of Assad.
It is important for rebel leaders at this point in time to make clear throwing out Assad will NOT result in installation of a cleric run Syria. They must reach out to Christians and Alawites with assurances rights of ALL Syrians will be protected and honored. It this is made clear, Assad will get on a plane and leave.
