The Obama administration is seeking to alter military strategy in Afghanistan by emphasizing the importance of maintaining good relations with civilians and turning the population against the Tabliban. General Stanley McChrystal who has just assumed command, issued a directive ordering officers to avoid fighting in areas where there are many civilians. They are to avoid blasting away at villages because of the presence of a few Taliban. According to a spokesman for McChrystal, “But if there is a compound they’re taking fire from nd they can remove themselves from the area safely, without undue danger to the forces, then that’s the option they should take. Because in there compounds we know there are often civilians kept captive by the Taliban.”
Undoubtedly, the right wing media such as Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Ann Coulter will be up in arms, but the reality is for every Taliban killed that results in civilian deaths, the Taliban get new recruits. The new policy is consistent with successful anti-guerrilla actions.
