The Fight For Prison Rights!

In an era when attention if focused on treatment of Islamic prisoners held at Guantanamo or Americans like Bradley Manning the last person of interest is an American inmate of a prison in the United States of America. Believe it or not but American prisons in the 18th and 19th centuries were regarded as models of how to treat those sent to prison. Today, they are models of how not to treat anyone who has been sent to prison. Hundreds of prisoners in California jails have been engaging in hunger strikes to protest the inhumane treatment of anyone–those without money– who winds up in jail. Many have lost considerable weight and this loss imperils their life expectancy. A core demand is to end solitary confinement as a punishment. Believe it or not but there are some men who have been kept under such conditions for DECADES!

Believe it or not but prisoners are fighting for the right to order BOOKS. No, not weapons or anything that might be transformed into a weapon, but a book which contains words and ideas. Many have even been denied the right to see loved ones.

Governor Brown is a liberal. How about acting like one??
