Time Defies Indonesian Court

September 11th, 2007 by Fred Stopsky · No Comments

Time magazine was slapped with a $106 million damage payment by an Indonesian court for allegedly defaming the name and reputation of former Indonesian dictator Suharto. In addition to the cash settlement, several Time magazine employees were order to apologize for the story. Time’s lawyer, Todung Mulya Lubis defiantly responded: “Time magazine will take any legal step available to defend freedom of the press.” One of the judges on the panel rendering the decision was a former general who served under Suharto. Apparently, he did not see any conflict in interest in serving on the panel.

Suharto was a dictator who Time claims amassed a fortune of at least $15 billion. The story was written after four months of investigation that took reporters into at least 11 countries. It is rather difficult believing dictator Suharto did not gather together for self and family several billions of dollars.
