Too Far, Too Fast?

Senator John Kerry has spent the past few weeks in Afghanistan where he talked with President Karzai and US General McChrystal concerning alternative solutions to problems in the nation. He has been consistently worried about the inept, corrupt Karzai government and its ability to support military action in Afghanistan. Kerry believes the request by General McChyrstal for 40,000 more troops goes “too far, too fast.” The senator outlined his views as believing, “under the right circumstances if we can be confident that military efforts can be sustained and built upon, then I would support the president should he decide to send some additional troops.”

As a veteran of the Vietnam War, Kerry understands only too well how easy it is to slip into the problem of “more troops, more troops” without any guarantee the local government is respected by the people.
