Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg died two days ago which means the governor of New Jersey has an opportunity to select an interim US Senator. However, Republican Governor Chris Christie is running for re-election in a state that contains many, many Democrats. He has decided that caution if much preferable than pleasing Republicans by selecting an interim Republican to the
Senate. Christie decided to allow voters to make the decision in October.
Of course, also in the mind of Christie was having the vote take place in November which would have meant the name of popular Mayor Cory Booker would have been on the ballot and thousands more Democrats would be voting. Retreat is sometimes the wise decision even if it does not please the Tea Party nuts.
