Trouble In Fijiland-Censorship, That Is

The Fiji islands have been taken over by members of the military who are contnuing their effort to end democracy on the islands. The military government defied an order from the High Court and deported the Australian publsiher of the nation’s leading newspaper. The oup-installed gov ernment claimed publisher Evan Hannah was a threat to national security and put him on a Korean plane and sent him to Korea. It was the second deportation of a newspaper publisher whose major crime appears to be refusing to accept the violation of human dignity on the part of the military government.

The Australian government denounced the deportation and said it raised “serious questions about its respect for freedom of the press.”

Fiji is split between the indigenous Fiji people and Indians who were brought in to work the sugar cane plantations.
