Tunnels To Hell

Once upon a time soldiers of opposing armies fought “fairly.” During World War I, an army would line up its soldiers in trenches, their artillery would blast away for a few hours in hope of disabusing enemy soldiers of the desire to fire their machine guns. During World War II, tanks might be at the head of charing soldiers, and their task would be to blast the armor into the enemy, in hope their soldiers would flee in panic. Or, we had pilots in the air staffing bombers and fighter planes whose task was to bomb and bomb, heck, soldiers, cities filled with civilians. In return, the enemy blasted away with their anti-aircraft weapons. On the seas, huge battleships or aircraft carriers sailed loaded with huge amounts of weapons or planes in order to kill the enemy. The only thing that was not out in the open were those nasty submarines lurking beneath the waves and ready to send torpedoes into unaware surface ships.

In other words, armies fought fairly. One knew where the enemy was, and an opposing army stood its ground ready for the assault. That was then, now is now. Hamas has constructed a vast array of tunnels through which their soldiers dash, ready to emerge into the open and catch Israel soldiers unaware of the danger. There is something sneaky about this form of murder. I thought murder had to be in the open. The Israel Defense Force(IDF) is upset at this unfair form of fighting. Perhaps, the IDF could give Hamas planes and artillery in order to have a fair fight? Let’s play by the rules of warfare.

Such is the modern state of military thinking. Fight fairly. Unfortunately, neither side fights fairly with civilians!
