US Holds 22,000 Iraqi Prisoners

An Iraqi official, speaking anonymously, told the newspaper Azzaman that over 22,000 Iraqis are being held as prisoners in detention camps by the United States. The overwhelming majority of them have never been charged with anything nor have they been tried. Some have been in jail for years. Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, is leading the fight to have innocent people released. So far, he has secured an agreement with US officials to release 50 prisoners a day during the holy month of Ramadan. He has been unable to secure a solid agreement on trials for American guards who mistreated prisoners.

There is something wrong with the logic of releasing 50 prisoners a day during Ramadan. Why release prisoners if you believe they are guilty? Or, why not release all prisoners immediately who are innocent?
