It is still unclear as to which of the candidates a majority of those fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan will support in the coming election. An AP-Yahoo Poll a few months ago revealed veterans supported Senator McCain by a 49% to 32% margin over Senator Obama. However, Obama has collected $327,000 in campaign donations from American soldiers compared to $227,000 secured by John McCain. Most probably a majority of troops believe McCain has greater military experience than Obama, but there is also extreme dissatisfaction with the progress of the war.
An unknown factor is the increase in violence in Afghanistan even as violence decreases in Iraq. Groups like the Iraq Veterans Against War represent those who are disgusted with the Bush administration but many continue wanting to believe their sacrifices had to mean something. It is difficult accepting your fighting was meaningless.
