Dozens of rockets and mortar rounds were fired at Israel after their military units killed six militants in the Gaza Strip. The Islamist Hamas movement that currently is in charge of Gaza said its armed wing responded to the Israel attack with its own attack. About 53 rockets and mortars were fired into Israel territory. Each side accuses the other of violating the truce. Israel sources said their troops entered Gaza in order to destroy a tunnel they believe was to be used to kidnap Israel soldiers. “A unit of paratroopers, backed by sappers and the air force intervened, armed terrorists opened fire at the troops from the structure above the tunnel.” Israel claims it returned fire and killed the six.
Israel argues they acted to prevent the emergence of a serious threat. The incident merely highlights the importance of establishing a process by which potential threats to peace are headed off rather than waiting for the event to occur.
