The world’s longest lasting war hopefully finally has come to a conclusion with signing of an agreement between the government of Burma(Myanmar) with ethnic groups in their country. Negotiations with the Karen National Union have led to an agreement in which the government ceases military operations against the Shan, Karenni,Chin and Kachin ethnic groups. It is thought Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on her recent visit to Myanmar urged this cease fire as further evidence the government wanted peace, not only with their rebels, but with the world.
Hopefully, once this war is over, the Burmese government can continue efforts to achieve peace with all members of their society. A first step would be a democratic election for Parliament.
