People of west Sahara have been fighting for their independence from Morocco and some students from the area who attend university in Morocco were recently killed during a peaceful demonstration. The Saharawi students were holding a sit in at a bus stop when the bus driver accelerated his speed and drove right into the students killing two. According to student activist Rabab Amidane, the police directed the bus driver to use his vehicle as a weapon of murder. Human rights leaders insist there is a deliberate pattern on the behalf of the Moroccan government to brutalize and kill anyone who dares challenge their claim to possession of the west Sahara region.
Students are demanding the right to freely express their desire for an independent nation of West Sahara as well as calling for investigations into the killing of several students who were active in the fight for freedom. After the bus driver killed the students, police entered the area and beat up other students, but no action was taken against the driver.
